I am a saver. I save dogs. I save cats. I save worms.
Yep. I save worms. Don't you judge me.
The thought struck me this morning that the worms may not appreciate it so much.
There I was walking the dog after 4 long days of cold, dreary rain. It was the first dry morning we'd had since Thursday. As Pooh stopped to sniff, whiz, and do anything else he needed to do, I bent down and picked up the worms that were hopelessly stranded on the sidewalk around me and tossed them back onto the grass. I mean, really, they were going to die if they stayed on the sidewalk, victims of birds, cars, or the cruel cruel atmospheric humidity and sun.
And it hit me. What if they were suicidal worms? What if they were the victims of worm domestic violence who had finally found the bravery to make a wriggle for it under the cover of darkness and excessive moisture, hoping only to make it across the parking lot to the greener grass in front of the 800 building? Willing to risk life and limb... oh, well... anyway... What if they were worms hoping only for a new start, and there I was, throwing them back to their old neighborhoods, their old troubles?
Then I thought, I need to quit going to the gym at 6am. That shit gets my brain firing away far too early... long before I have anything useful to ponder. I should really wear a helmet.
